Before we get into our web hosting and WordPress plugin updating process, we felt compelled to help you better understand the power of WordPress and why so many people choose this platform. Additionally, we wanted you to understand what a plugin is and why billions of plugins have been downloaded.

What are the benefits of WordPress and why is it so popular?

WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world and is used by nearly 75 million websites and 35% of the entire internet. The benefits of WordPress are as follows:

  • Easy to customize
  • Cost effective
  • SEO friendly
  • eCommerce functionality
  • Easy to manage
  • Safe and secure
  • Billions of plugins to choose from

What is a plugin?

According to WP Beginner, a plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. Think of a plugin as an “add-on.” When you want a certain feature on your site, if it doesn’t come out of the box, there’s a good chance there’s a plugin that’ll accomplish for what you’re looking for.

What is an example of a plugin?

Let’s say you have an eCommerce website and need to integrate revenue from sales into QuickBooks, your accounting software. This isn’t going to come out of the box with a standard WordPress site. You’ll need to download a plugin to enable the integration.  WordPress.org plugins have received 1 billion total downloads, and counting. Some are free. Some are paid. There are so many plugins to choose from, which allows you to customize your site to your business needs.

Why is it important to update plugins?

Neglecting to update WordPress plugins means not only that you risk being hacked, you may also be missing out on new features / improvements. If you don’t update plugins and new versions of the plugin or the site are released, you can be past the point of no return, as your site may no longer be compatible. This can cause catastrophic issues with your site.

About Media Captain’s Hosting/Plugin Updating Process

As a web design and development company, we build a lot of WordPress sites for our clients. This is the most popular platform used for clients, hands down. We know too well that if you don’t update plugins, it’ll lead to future problems and issues and things on your site can break.

How does Media Captain tackle plugin updates?

In-House: First and foremost, we have developers in-house in our physical location in Columbus, Ohio. We aren’t outsourcing the plugin updates; it’s done in the friendly confines of our office. If there is ever an issue, you can pick up the phone and speak with the developer working on your site.

Hosting: We have a dedicated host through WP Engine. In order to be accepted onto our hosting platform, your plugins must be up to date, which we take care of before migrating your site over to our hosting account.

Backups: Our host takes backups of your site each day. If heaven forbid something goes wrong with your site after a change is made, we can revert to the previous day’s version of your site prior to any changes being made.

Test Site & Live Site: We also have staging and production environment for our sites within our dedicated host. If a client makes a request on their website, we make the initial change in staging (test site) to make sure everything checks out before implementing in staging (the live site).

Tackling Plugin Updates: On a monthly basis, a developer on our staff goes through your plugins and updates each one of them in staging before updating in production. If there’s a broken plugin or an issue we detect, we are proactive in fixing the issue.
