Is Instagram Direct Better Than Snapchat? Facebook Launches Instagram Direct

If you follow social media news like The Media Captain, you are well aware that the 23-year old co-founder of Snapchat, Evan Spiegel, turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook and then a $4 billion bid from Google.

Jeff Macke of Yahoo! Finance stated that the following… “History will paint Evan Spiegel as either one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs ever, or a delusional fool.”

It was announced on December 12, 2013, that Facebook launched a strike at Snapchat with Instagram Direct. With Instagram Direct, users can send copies of a picture or a video to up to 15 other users without making the picture public or sharing with their followers. And unlike on Instagram’s usual posts, comments on the directly shared pictures flow between the sender and the recipients in real time, like a chat service.

There’s no option to disappear the photos, however, so Snapchat may still reign over the real of photographic sexting. Snapchat may already have a loyal user base that is willing to stick with the originator of the self-erasing selfies.

It is definitely too early to put Spiegel in the history books as a delusional fool. With the skill-set that companies like Facebook and Google have, it was only a matter of time before these social tech giants replicated the Snapchat idea. Spiegel couldn’t have predicted that it would have happened this quickly though.
