The Media Captain reads dozen upon dozens of online media, marketing and video production articles each week. Often times, we post the most interesting statistics onto Facebook and Twitter. We thought it would be beneficial to compile a list of interesting statistics that we scrolled upon over the past seven days.

Whether the topic is social media, online marketing, video production or something completely random, these five stats will certainly be a conversation starter with your friends and coworkers. (That is if you’re as obsessed with the web as we are).

  • 184 million U.S. Internet users watched 36.9 billion online content videos in July 2012. This is up from 180 million in July 2011, 178 million in July 2010, 158 million in July 2009, 142 million in July 2008, and 134 million in July 2007. So, over the past five years, the number of Americans watching online video has increased 37.3 percent.  – 
  • A whopping 96 percent of Google’s $37.9 billion 2011 revenue came from advertising. –
  • “Porno” has been the 20th most popular search term online so far in 2012 with over 68,000,000 global monthly searches. –
  • Shareaholic says Pinterest was the fourth biggest traffic source in Augusta among its publishers – beating out Yahoo organic search, which fell to fifth.   –  
  • Social Media usage has increased 356% over the past six years. –
